HOW TO CREATE MY FIRST RESUME
If you are a young singer or artist who is starting to audition for different plays, musicals, choirs around town, and you wonder what is a resume? and how do I get one? Here's some advise you may find useful.
A Resume is a summary of your skills and experience, but it also has some important personal information, such as your height and weight. Sometimes, roles are designed for people with certain heights, so it is very important for a Director to have that information handy. Right after your personal information you should list your main skills. Your skills are those features, academic, artistic or general that make you a strong artist, and they have to be the truth! So think about your academic strengths, that is a good place to start. If you are a beginner, you can list skills like: Strong reader, strong projection of the voice, strong actor/actress, strong singer, strong performer, strong decision maker, strong memorizer, strong problem solver, strong hiphop/ballet/tap dancer, creative, hardworking, enjoy performing, joyful. You may think it is not related, but two of the strongest skills that Directors look for in young talent is good projection of the voice (that means the sound of your talking voice carries well into a big hall), and strong reading skills.
The next section of your resume should have your Recent Experience either singing or performing. Let's say you have been volunteering for the church's choir, that counts! Also if you have volunteered for a christmas play, or if you sing with a community choir. If you have actually been on other musical plays, you should list the most relevant or important.
Then comes the Education part, which should contain the information of your school first, and then information on vocal lessons, or musical or dance classes you may be enrolled in. Remember to write the names of your music/voice/dance coaches or teachers.
Your resume should have your name as a Header in Bold bigger font than the rest of the text, and it must be centered. Under your name you should list your phone number and address in smaller font. Your Resume should not be longer than one page. If you are more experienced, then keep it to two pages, printed in both sides of the same sheet.
Always bring extra copies of your resume and headshot.
Most imortant of all, focus on your craft and practice everyday, so that they will be so impressed with your talent that they cannot wait to take a look at your resume.
